Teasing The Granulizator for Live

You know me.. I’m one of those never really happy with tools I found before.
As a huge diy guy, I decided (again) to build my own granulator machine.
This one has that grain I wanted, I needed for my own music.

RELEASED HERE
I named it The Granulizator because it sounded & sounds fine, no?
My friend (and almost partner) Tristan Heau suggested Sound Blender. I loved that too.Though, I wanted to keep a reference to the grain, this small element you’ll love to manipulate with this device for Ableton Live / Max for Live.

Here are 2 sound records I already publish in a previous post

Here is the video I made.

I have to say something too.
I will compose an ep exclusively with it.
I really like textures I can make and it deserves to be explored further.

It would be released soon, probably as usual on saturday evening.
Stay tuned on the newsletter & twitter.

Small teaser of my second iOS app

Those evolving particles remind me birds.
They are all independent and generated in real time.

It will be available soon on App store and for a very very cheap price, you’ll have this app including a 13′ track by me as protofuse

Basically, it is a generative system based on objects instantiate from a global agent class.
That class implement a constructor and an update method which also draws the instance itself.

I still didn’t spoil the UI.
By touching the screen, you can see 7 sliders + 1 for sound volume.
Those 7 sliders provide a way to alter the global particles clouds behaviors, but also the design of each particle.

It is designed for iPhone & iPad (retina or not) & iPod.
It is a nice way to enter into my minimal world.

Some mobile particles

I just finished another (wow) iOS application.
It would be better on iPad, but is totally designed for iPhone / iPod too.

This is an algorithme which generates in real time particules with strange behaviours.
You’ll have some sliders to interact with the algorithm.
I hope you’ll like it.

The nice thing is: A totally new & high quality music loop by me will be included inside the app in order to illustrate on an accoustic way the strange particles cloud atmosphere.

It would be released on app store this afternoon.
It means, considering the long Apple’s process of reviewing, it would be available if everything is fine, around end of march.

Autechre – Rotar

again, I can say I love it.
I especially like how the sounds are separate between this epileptic rhythmic & the progressive evolving sounds with long attack..

enjoy!

Maximilian audio library, Openframeworks & iOS

A very fast message, before a longer one.
I hesitated about the right  sound library to use in my iOS machine project.

Maximilian is a very powerful wrapper that allows to use portaudio or rtaudio very easily.

If you try to compile your XCode project using Maximilian, BE SURE you have linked the Accelerate.framework library.
Without it  won’t work anymore and you can look for very long time.

Many thanks to joshua who hardly try to help me as the newbie of the day.
But indeed, it hasn’t been written anywhere !

(so I’m a bit proud to have found this one :p)

The reference post is there

The Protoclidean sequencer for Ableton Live

Announcing the next sequencer for Ableton Live. Based on euclidean algorithm, it offers a very nice & flexible way to distribute your notes in a time interval.

It will be available very soon at http://designthemedia.com/theprotoclidean

I enjoyed to design it because I tried to use the sketch javascript object inside JSUI Max6 object.
This is a very nice way to embed UI + engine inside something that is … very fast.

I hope you’ll like this new unusual sequencer.
As you already know, I don’t like boring usual stuff.

Break the line, go where noone waits for you then become unique!

Hardware & I

Because I’m often more than one in my head, I like softwares but I like hardwares too.
We are all dual, but in my case, being also Design the Media & Protofuse, I’d like to merge all inside one (astral) body named Julien.

Mates, it is hard sometimes, but  finally, if I was one and only one, it wouldn’t be fun would it be ?

This is why, today, after an hard work around the MatriX, I want to make a “unifying (astral) hardware”

It would be software inside hardware, music inside software, engineering but artistic project.

I had some hardware experiences like the protodeck (huge) controller
I designed some other little machines like a monome clone.
But purpose was more to make controllers, I mean: machines I could use to control something (software or other machines)

Here are some unrevealed before photographies from the making of the Protodeck !!

Now & because Protofuse became a huge part of my life (huge projects coming, 2 gigs in that only week in UK, remix & mastering for friends too), I WANT to make a sound machine for me but for you too.

It would pop out ambient & zen sounds, in a relaxation purpose
You could use it everywhere and even load my own sounds produced each month.

Firstly, I’d like to know if you’d like to grab one in the case I’d bring them to life.
Please comment your opinions & feelings about that :)

I just created a closed facebook group in which I’ll invite only very close collaborators & some friends too in order to share & discuss about my designs.
Check the group and eventually ask me if you think I forgot to  join your profile to it : https://www.facebook.com/groups/215860821831464/

Take care.

The NEXT sequencer playing SKANNER

(check the video at the end of this article)

SKANNERis a synthesizer based on scanned synthesis, made by Native Instruments as a REAKTOR‘S ensemble (an ensemble is like a max patch, a bunch of visualized objects connected with cords)

Scanned synthesis involves a slow dynamic system whose frequencies of vibration are below about 15 Hz. The ear cannot hear the low frequencies of the dynamic system. So, to make audible frequencies, the “shape” of the dynamic system, along a closed path, is scanned periodically. The “shape” is converted to a sound wave whose pitch is determined by the speed of the scanning function. Pitch control is completely separate from the dynamic system control. Thus timbre and pitch are independent. This system can be looked upon as a dynamic wave table. The model can be compared to a slowly vibrating string, or a two dimensional surface obeying the wave equation.  (WIKIPEDIA)

Its guts look like this  Continue reading »
