Hardware & I

Because I’m often more than one in my head, I like softwares but I like hardwares too.
We are all dual, but in my case, being also Design the Media & Protofuse, I’d like to merge all inside one (astral) body named Julien.

Mates, it is hard sometimes, but  finally, if I was one and only one, it wouldn’t be fun would it be ?

This is why, today, after an hard work around the MatriX, I want to make a “unifying (astral) hardware”

It would be software inside hardware, music inside software, engineering but artistic project.

I had some hardware experiences like the protodeck (huge) controller
I designed some other little machines like a monome clone.
But purpose was more to make controllers, I mean: machines I could use to control something (software or other machines)

Here are some unrevealed before photographies from the making of the Protodeck !!

Now & because Protofuse became a huge part of my life (huge projects coming, 2 gigs in that only week in UK, remix & mastering for friends too), I WANT to make a sound machine for me but for you too.

It would pop out ambient & zen sounds, in a relaxation purpose
You could use it everywhere and even load my own sounds produced each month.

Firstly, I’d like to know if you’d like to grab one in the case I’d bring them to life.
Please comment your opinions & feelings about that :)

I just created a closed facebook group in which I’ll invite only very close collaborators & some friends too in order to share & discuss about my designs.
Check the group and eventually ask me if you think I forgot to  join your profile to it : https://www.facebook.com/groups/215860821831464/

Take care.

Some strange feelings

I feel my artistic & creative side becoming hugely and totally jealous of the apparently other part.

It sounds frightening in some ways.

I guess this fear sounds normal and can be converted in huge amount of positive energy (btw, that fear doesn’t sound negative in any manner today)

My mood seems boosted by that.
It seems paradoxal because I ever thought and tested fear as a big obstacle.

My mood is very open & creative.

I have to use it more, and probably more focused on center of the target :)

Some music feelings

This is a short post.
I swear I won’t make only big ones.

I want to compose my ambient album.
This is one of my main music sides.

Because I really like Lovecraft horror tales and because it really inspires my sound design and even my composition approach, I ‘d like to dedicate that album to his mythology & abysses.

I’ll probably make short videos where I could explain with words why I chose this sound or that soundscape, related to this infinite resource of inspiration.

Uncanny Sequencer for Ableton Live

You already know, probably, I’m both musician & engineer.
I love to design music & software. There are many similar ideas within it.
I’d like to write a post about … design, as a general/global sense.
Indeed, in order to design complex evolving musical structures, I needed to design my own sequencer based on probabilities.

I just released it because I had a lot of requests from all of you and I’m very happy about your enthusiasm.

Check the video now, I hope you’l! like it.
If you want to buy it, it is there: http://designthemedia.com/uncannysequencer

BIG Max5 installation Musee de la Buzine

Design the Media & I have been targeted & approached about a big Max5 installation project for a permanent exhibition (check this post)
This work has been featured on the cycling 74 website too:

For newbies, I used the Max5 framework provided & edited by those gurus at Cycling 74
Big up to them!

Now, I can name the place/museum.
The Museum is: Musée de la Buzine – Maison des cinématographies de la Méditerranée

It involves:
- 24 systems with OS Windows 7 64bits + 1 server with Windows 2008 server.
- 1 Gigabit Ethernet Network
- 7 touchscreen
- 10 video-projectors
- 20 rfid readers
- 7 arduino boards with 8 buttons + 8 ultrasonic sensors
- 2 multichannel (>4) sound system

I designed the whole system, integrating visuals from a graphic designer, videos from footage makers, sounds from sound designers.

I had to create several tricky systems like:
- a dynamic subtitler for video (using basic .srt files for easy maintenance & change by the customer)
- a scheduler (using UDP datagrams to shutdown the whole exhibition at particular hours all along the years & using Wake On Lan UDP datagrams to wake up all in the morning too)
- a database integration (it provides a system to make Max5 patches knowing what is the language of the visitor’s RFID Card)
- full network connections to remote control all patches with UDP datagrams (put the installation stand by mode to save energy, etc)
- specific Arduino firmwares (input reading + output writing)

This Museum has been inaugurated by the french Ministry of Culture, 2 days ago.

You can see more about this museum and about what we made on this video:

I’m proud about this big project.

I hope to make & build systems like that in a (close) future but actually, I’m on many other amazing projects and probably more personal projects.
Indeed, on my own, I wrote and sent a state of intent for a personal installation system.

A big max5 permanent installation supporting Meditteranean Cinema

The 6 rules to design the best user interfaces

“User Interface Design is the art of building the elusive missing link between you and the system you want to control and then hear the desired results.

One of the biggest challenges in user interface design is to keep the user perspective as the focal point of any Interface Design project.
As a case in point, just take a look at the grand majority of popular user interfaces, and how they are
commonly used.
Once you do, you’ll begin to understand that a lot of companies (even the biggest ones) seem to have forgotten this main idea.”

- 20 pages written by Julien Bayle (protodeck‘s designer)
- 6 items to avoid to miss the point
- fresh designed by Manuela Ciancilla
- rocky reviewed translation by Glenn Reuther

Huge interactive installation project with Max5

I have been targeted and chosen to develop a big interactive installation in a new museum in Marseille.

It will involve a lot of technology and I’ll develop a “kind of” client/server application using the Max5 framework.

It will involve RFID tags, database connections and probably more stuff we’ll figure out on the road.
