Digital Collisions 1.1 new features

I remixed a lot of things in Digital Collisions:
- totally remixed user interface
- sound engine improved
- multitouch balls grabbing & interactions possible & efficient
- now compatible with iOS 4.3 to the latest versions
- help included

Still available ON APP STORE FOR IPHONE & IPOD & FOR IPAD

I have been VERY happy and proud that Jordan Rudess the keyboardist of Dream Theater made this nice & short video of Digital Collisions 1.0
Apparently, the background being dark, Jordan played it late at night :)

I listened a lot Dream Theater ; I’m really proud.
I know Jordan designs iPad music applications with some designer/developers. I’d be very happy to explore & collaborate on an application with him.
At least, he’s free to contact me if he sees that post. I will propose him something.

Exploring real life use of applications/tools for artistic & musical expressions is one of the most efficient way to make the best applications ever.
Indeed, I’m currently (STILL) designing my 2D sequencer. Still no teaser or anything, I’m in the lab with it.
It would drive protofuse (my alter ego in case you didn’t link those 2 names) to perform, compose on an UNIQUE way you didn’t see ever.
It isn’t to be proud why I’m writing it, just because it is true. That way will make a revolution. At least, Protofuse will Continue reading »

my first app on App Store !

Dear followers/friends, I’m so happy.
I designed this application, based on an algorithm I coded initially for Processing (which is JAVA-based)
I translated it and improved it too inside C++ language in order to fit with Open Frameworks framework, and especially with iOS build.
I want to thank a lot Reza who supports his precious MIT licensed ofxUI addon for UI design purposes.

The first post about it is here.

This application is also a new & nice way to test how I could distribute my music to you.
Music alone can often sound a bit sad.
Now, if you grab that app, you’ll have :
- a 13 minutes track of evolving ambient by me as protofuse
- a visuals generator based on my algorithm of flocking particles

I can now use this logo.
Click on the logo and you’ll be driven to Mobile Particles.

I found a new way of expression which can live on mobile devices and be closer from you.
Here is a view of the menu.
Each parameter is tweakable and make the visuals evolving a lot.

I hope you could share it with your friends.

Designing my granulator machine

Granular synthesis is fascinating.

It is basically based on the sampling technic, but with a very unconditional feature.

AVAILABLE HERE !

Here are 2 samples coming that sound blender named THE GRANULIZATOR.

To understand the granular synthesis, you have to get that.
Take a sample.
Play a little slice, then another one.
Change the order of playing, size the slices differently & dynamically, add a bit of noise (randomness) in the play making the playing window moving a bit around a global controlled and moving value…
The slice is named the grain.

The name of synthesis is important here: indeed, there is a literally synthesized new output coming from the sample named here : the source.

Then, we can add some interesting features at a macro level (the global parameters like the manner the playing window moves) or at a very micro level (the grains themselves)

Here are some links about this field:
http://granularsynthesis.com (nice portal)
http://ftwem.com/forums/techniques/granular-synthesis-and-microsound-primer (nice forum post)
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/dec05/articles/granularworkshop.htm (VERY nice article by SoS)

I’ll release finally this new synthesis tool asap on designthemedia.com
I could also port it to … iOS. I’d love. Granular synthesis, especially if it involves a huge number of voices/grains, is a bit hardcore for the chip/cpu. It means I have to experiment a bit.
Of course, it will be possible. Some people already did it (with more or less success, I have to confess)

Stay Tuned!

Laurent interviewing me on his blog

Laurent Boghossian is a great friend and one of this guy who could build a world with 5 kg of sand only.
I already talked about him here, and I’m doing again today because he made and published an interview of me.

(if you cannot wait for reading my interview on his website, the link is .. a bit below :) )

I’m very moved by his words and he described very well how our both new lives have begun several months, years ago.

I’m inviting you to go there to read the interview entitled:

Design the media : Design your music like you’d like to design your life

I’m also inviting you to browse his blog 35nextyears.com
It is full of a lot of nice life design tips & tricks which can teach you a lot!

From program development to life design

This article talks about how we can design our life and what it can be related to program design.
It is my own experiences, and some I saw for some close friends too.
This isn’t the guide I could write about “How to change your life & have fun by creating your path?” but just a kind of introduction to some concepts (at the end) amongst a lot of other sweet words :)

This is not my best photo, but it is just me.
I’m just a human, but I decide where I want to go.

LFO 2.0 for Ableton Live

UPDATE: just featured by SYNTHTOPIA (many thanks)

After one year, I just worked and upgraded the famous LFO for Ableton Live.
It was the first real LFO officially supported (by us) for Ableton Live and it has a been liked & used by a lot of people.

If you already bought the LFO 1.x, it will be FREE for you so I suggest to go there if you didn’t buy it yet.

It will be  available here: http://designthemedia.com/lfo

With LFO 2.0, you can modulate each parameters of your liveset in real time.
You only have to drop it in a MIDI track, click on a button then click on the parameter you want to modulate and it works.
You can use built-in waveforms or even draw your custom one.
You can use the LFO 2.0 synced with the Live’s transport, or totally free by setting up the frequency.

Features :
- modulation of ALL parameters including tracks’ mixers (volume, panning, sends)
- free or synced to transport
- classic & raw waveforms (sine, ramp up, ramp down, saw, square, noise)
- custom waveform available with the whiteboard to draw it with your mouse
- presets & liveset friendly (all is saved with your liveset including the custom waveform)
- undo history safe
- LFO can control LFO to produce rich and complex modulations
- MIDI thru compliant (you can use it directly in your MIDI instrument track)
- GUI remixed
- all LFO2.0 parameters auto mappable to APC40

Requirements :
- Ableton Live 8.2.x
- Max for Live

My M4_U feelings & report

I wrote “my” because I wanted to relate my feelings, my perception of this very great & unique event made in Leicester and at which I have been invite by Sean Carroll.
My M4_U started a bit late, because I was travelling.

Indeed, I caught my flight around 10h50, landing on Gatwick Airport, then took a train to St Pancras Intl, and then another one to Leicester.
