Why did I decide to switch from win to mac ?

I wanted to repost and share this post again here, on my personal blog.
The original post has been written on Sept 4, 2011
This is the first post about the big dive I decided to have: switching from windows to OSX !
This one won’t be very thick because I didn’t receive the mac book pro yet BUT yes: I ORDERED it.
A little story of walking to MS Windows
I had a computer in hands when I was 6 years old.
My dear father bought a Commodore 64 with which I played and even programmed in Basic a bit.

After that, because he was & still is a big geek interested by technology and hacking, he bought the famous PC Amstrad 1512 with a 20Mbytes hard drive (a must!)

I also used a lot my Amstrad CPC 6128 at these times

After that, I used an AMIGA 500

… and finally began with x86 family on Windows 3.1

Since this date (around 1994), I used MS Windows OS.
I everytime found tools fitting with my needs.
From Fasttracker to Buzz, from Cubase 1.0 (!) to Reason.
Everything worked and still works VERY fine.
I had to wait for windows XP, btw, to have a real finished OS, I had to confess!
But before that, it worked however!
Beginning to use only laptops
I began to use only laptop because I need mobility.
From my sofa to my bedroom, from home to the beach, I need to MOVE !!!
I had several laptop, asus, HP, toshiba.
The last one on which I’m writing right now is a HP DV7 3080ef

4Go RAM, Core i7 720 QM, 17″, a lot of I/O
A pretty nice beast!
Windows 7 64bits works VERY fine on it.
I NEVER had any issues with it.
He can be a bit WARM when it thinks about to much with its CPU, but it is ok!
The only ISSUE (!) is AUTONOMY!
As I already wrote in a blog post here, I need to feel myself free & mobile.
Electricity is a rare energy in the street, on the beach… at least to use it with my laptop.
And a friend of mine repeated me his MacBook Pro still had around 6 to 7 hours of autonomy, running Ableton Live in the train to Berlin (!!) when he used to go there from Marseille.
Uhhh. 6 hours …?
Ok. I need to check it out !
Intermede about the PC vs MAC war
I have to write I NEVER have been in that unuseful & stupid war.
A LOT of friends of mine used Mac since a lot of years, and some of them kidded me a bit with my PC, but not so much.
I always thought and still think : the best tool is the one which fits with your needs
No better tools than others, no better species than others.
The only important thing to consider is: to have something which matches your needs !
Some thoughts came on last summer about new tools
Considering my needs of freedom, because I NEED to code or compose or write plans or support my users/customers everywhere & everytime I want, I absolutely need autonomy (FIRST REQUIREMENT).
I’m actually designing Audio Plugins
I planned to create stunning & unique iPAD apps tools for live performance, not only controllers, but especially synth, drone machines & more.
Because I want to provide real & efficient app, I didn’t choose to use a virtual machine inside Windows 7, running an official OSX Lion License, which isn’t supported officially by VMWare and with which I would have had problems, compatibilities issues and especially Core Audio/sounds problems!
So I need an OSX (SECOND REQUIREMENT)
Basically, these 2 requirements fold into only one with the second one, and I decided to explore Mac Book Pro features, and OSX and iOS developers tools too.
I discovered and digged A LOT these last 2 weeks.
I have to thank a lot my friends to have provided me a lot of complements & infos around this topic!
It helps me a lot to make my choice.
THE decision
Obviously, I decided to offer my actual HP, working SO nice yet and very beautiful to my girlfriend Angela.
She begins to need a lot to use computers with her blog and activity
And I ordered the MacBook.
I’ll have it in 10 days I guess.
Next news, asap!

Welcome to the world of IAC Bus / Aggregate Device / Automator / AppleScript.
However, it would have probably been clever to wait for them to release the new MBP generation.
What are you running nowadays? Which software(s)?
softwares about what?
[...] Indeed, I know computers since my first Commodore 64 as I explained here. [...]
